Introducing Our 2014 Summer Team!

It’s hard to believe that this June marks The Learning Group’s 10th summer providing educational programs on Nantucket! Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of working with scores of talented and passionate educators from around the country. Never have we been more excited about our team than we are this summer.

This year’s crew includes public, private, charter, and boarding school teachers. From a perfect set of SAT scores to the most valuable player in Division I Women’s hockey, our staff has excelled inside and outside of the classroom. 80% of the team has master’s degrees in their fields and 100% have full-time teaching experience at outstanding schools.  Please join us in welcoming the Summer 2014 crew!

Cristin Carter is returning for her eighth consecutive summer in our elementary ranks. Cristin is a certified reading specialist and holds undergraduate and master’s degrees in education from Boston College. She currently teaches fourth grade at Longfellow Elementary School in Chicago.

Casey Cordone is back for her second summer with Nantucket Learning. Casey is certified in literacy, childhood education, and special education. Casey has 8 years of teaching experience, holds a B.S. in Childhood Education from SUNY Cortland, and earned a Master’s in Literacy and Special Education from Manhattanville College.

Kiira Dosdall is joining us for her first summer on island. Kiira has experience teaching at both the elementary and high school levels and currently teaches English and Study Skills at Brewster Academy. Kiira graduated cum laude from Colgate University where she was captain of the women’s varsity hockey team.

Erin Gu joins us as a math and science teacher. Erin is also introducing NLG’s Mandarin Chinese enrichment programs this summer. She is certified in Biology, Chemistry, Mandarin, and Mathematics instruction. Erin currently teaches at Charlestown High School. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College and a Master of Education from Harvard University.

Kate Lyons is back for her fourth summer as an elementary teacher and Spanish instructor. Kate currently teaches 2nd grade at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.. Kate is certified as a school administrator, ESL teacher, and special educator. She holds an undergraduate degree in Latin American studies from Emory, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Georgetown, and an Education Specialist degree from George Washington University.

Katelyn Skowronski joins us for her first summer on island as an English teacher. Katelyn has five years of high school teaching experience and currently teaches English at Ridley High School in Folsom, PA. She holds a B.S. in Secondary Education and Master of Education from Bloomsburg University where she is also enrolled as a Ph.D candidate.

Michael Strandberg is joining us for his first summer as a Mathematics instructor. Mike teaches at St. John’s Prep in New York City and has experience teaching math courses from Algebra through AP Calculus. Mike earned a perfect score on his SATs (800 Math; 800 Critical Reading) and will support Nantucket Learning’s SAT & ACT programs on island. He holds an undergraduate degree in Operations Research from Columbia University.

Cory Warfield is back for her second summer of elementary instruction with Nantucket Learning. Cory currently teaches 4th grade at the Driscoll School in Brookline, MA. She holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Cornell and a Master of Education from Boston College.

Yu Yan Xu is also back for her second summer of mathematics instruction. Yu Yan teaches calculus and discrete math at Lawrence High School. She holds a B.A. in mathematics and a Master of Mathematics Teaching from Boston University.
